Catholic Performing Arts Christian Drama Shield Winners

In a first for Holy Cross College, an entry in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival has been selected as the shield winner for the category. 'The Story of Oscar Romero', a dramatisation performed by Middle and Senior School Drama students has won the Ron Dullard Shield for Christian Drama. Student and staff representatives will now attend the Festival Concert at the Perth Concert Hall to be presented with the shield and the performance item may be selected to feature at the concert. This is the icing on the cake for the students involved in this performance, which received 'Excellent' rankings in every category and also received an Outstanding Performance Award.

This is a huge achievement for Holy Cross College Performing Arts as it is the first time an entry has been selected as a shield winner and HCC has only participated in the festival for six short years. A big congratulations to the students involved. It is also fitting that this performance has won the shield with this week marking 100 years since the birth of Blessed Oscar Romero.

HCC Book Week has begun

Today saw the launch of our Book Week activities.  Students across the College chose to participate in a variety of activities from listening to stories being read to experiencing Harry Potter's Patronus Sound and Light Show.

The activities will continue all week.

Looking forward to seeing all of the book characters come to life on Thursday for our dress up day!

Catholic Performing Arts Update (Week 4)

Week 4 saw a particularly busy week for Holy Cross in the 2017 Catholic Performing Arts Festival with participation in the Secondary Solo Drama, Primary Sacred Choral and Jazz Combo sections taking place.

Secondary Solo Drama (Zophia Paluszak, Abbey'Lee Quantock and Calvin Thiel)
Chisholm Catholic College, Bedford

Senior Drama students travelled to Chisholm on Tuesday to present their scripted monologues for the Secondary Solo Drama Category. Zoe gave a very funny performance as a frustrated New Yorker attempting to deal with people in the supermarket, Abbey'Lee went down the rabbit hole, seeking some very good advice as Alice In Wonderland and Calvin brought the fat suit out once again and performed Bob's famous Puppet Show from this year's Senior Production, An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance. All students performed to a very high standard and should be very proud of this achievement!

Primary Sacred Choral (Junior Choir)
St Benedict's Church, Ardross

The Junior Choir made the long trip to Ardross on a rainy Wednesday to participate in the Primary Sacred Choral Section at St Benedict's. In a small section, they performed liturgical songs 'Celebrate Let's Celebrate' and 'Let Our Light Shine' with energy and reverence. The students did themselves and the College proud and were rewarded with a Merit Award for their efforts! Big congratulations to the Junior Choir and special thanks to Ms Connor, Mr Cunniffe, Mrs de Courcier and all the parents who attended on the day.

Jazz Combo (Jazz Ensemble)
Sacred Heart College, Sorrento

In the final group performance for Holy Cross this year, the Jazz Ensemble travelled to Sacred Heart College and lined up against an array of talented jazz bands. The small quartet presented classic jazz tunes Moondance and Autumn Leaves and held their own in a strong field. They are to be congratulated on a fantastic first performance as a group and we look forward to seeing their development!

Junior School Update

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten, during the storms this week, the children have been singing “Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!” It was very exciting to see hail fall from the sky and hear noisy thunder bolts. This week, we have been learning all about the letter Yy. We have had fun exploring yarn paintings, yachts, yellow paintings and collages. The students have also been learning to use positional language such as on, under, behind and between during play experiences.

Year 3

Wow! We have been busy these past few weeks as we settle into our routines and daily life in Year 3.

In Mathematics, we have focussed on multiplication and are now looking at the relationship with division. In the photos, you can see how Year 3 have investigated sharing equally using chocolate, with the emphasis on equal groups. The students have also used arrays to show how numbers can be multiplied and divided. We have also investigated mirror lines in symmetry and produced some fabulous images using contrasting colours. We will be spending time reading times on analogue and digital clocks to the nearest 5 minutes.

In English, we have looked into recounts and now move into the wonderful world of report writing. Linking our report writing with our History unit on schools, then and now; Are we there yet? This will provide us with wonderful meaningful opportunities to use, learn and develop our skills in research and note taking.

LIFE week quickly approaches and we are looking forward to dressing up as students, and teachers, of the past. We will wear our costumes twice; one on the Tuesday excursion and the other on the Wednesday of LIFE week.

With so much going on, let’s not forget Book week.  I’m Looking forward to seeing the kids dressed as their favourite characters.

Junior School Update

Pre-Kindergarten

What a wonderful start to Winter Term in Pre-Kindy! This term, we will be learning all about community helpers. We have begun with doctors, nurses and ambulance officers. Next week, we will begin looking at firefighters and will be having lots of hands-on fun exploring this topic!

Just a friendly reminder that it is important that all children bring a hat for outdoor play. It is important to teach the children about sun smart play even in the winter months.

Keep a look out on Seesaw for up-to-date snapshots of the fun we are having each week.

Thank you all for such a friendly welcome and we look forward to getting to know you all and your children this semester!

Year 5

This term, in Big Ideas and HASS, we are learning about Australian History with a focus on the question “How far have we come?”. We have started by looking at British colonisation. We have explored different parts of Australia (Van Diemen’s Land, Western Australia and Norfolk Island.

In Music, we have explored the evolution of music throughout history. First, we have travelled back to the 1950’s where Rock n Roll was introduced. We have learned about the famous artists such as Chuck Berry and The King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley.

In Religious Education, consequences and choices have been our main focus. The Year 5 students have noticed the difference between good consequences and negative punishments. We have been able to identify the choices that we have made through our own lives.

Jasmine
Year 5 Student

This term in Year 5, we have learned many things already. In Health, we have started learning about relationships. Relationships are connections we have with people, objects and animals. Another relationship we can have is with God in how we connect with Him and His family through Church and prayers. We have also made a chart outlining people we trust and how we can maintain and build on our relationships with friends and family.

In Mathematics, we have started learning more about fractions, in particular about denominators and numerators within the fraction. We have identified the value of the fraction by drawing diagrams based on the denominator and shading the number on the numerator. We then compared the fractions and sequenced them in the order of smallest to largest on a number line.

To conclude, Year 5 have been learning lots of interesting things. I am looking forward to what is next!

Year 5 Student

Year 6

This term in Year 6, we have been working really hard. We have been learning about lots of interesting topics and practising our research skills through project work.

Life Skills For Life: Year 6 were lucky enough to have had a visit from Surf Life Saving WA to teach us about First Aid. The fantastic instructors taught us how to perform CPR, treat cuts and bites, bandage injured limbs as well as create slings. This was an amazing experience and we all really learned a lot of useful skills that could one day save a life.

Mathematics: In Maths, Year 6 have been learning about the order of operations by using the BIMDAS rule which stands for: Brackets, Indices, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. We are now focusing on measurement and learning about the Metric System. We will be measuring length, weight and capacity of a variety of objects, distances and liquids.

Religious Education: In Religious Education, we have been using our research skills to research the Saints that we admire. Some of the Saints we chose were: Mother Teresa, St Patrick, St Columba, St John and Saint Padre Pio. The students who are making their Confirmation this term will be choosing their studied Saints as their Confirmation names.  We presented our projects with a poster and a keynote. Come and see our posters in the Paris building!

English: In English, Year Six have been studying Recount Writing and learning the structure and key features of these texts. We have been learning what a recount is, and that recounts can be personal, factual, or imaginary. They can be written in many different ways, such as letters, articles, journal entries, and even poems.
