Kindergarten
The Kindergarten students have been very busy over the last few weeks investigating the question, ‘How do things work?’ Every Thursday morning, Mr. Gerber comes in and shows us amazing science experiments and explains why things happen. We couldn’t believe what was happening before our own eyes with the elephant toothpaste, explosions, fizzing and popping!
We have also been enjoying the Spring weather with lots of music, dancing and dress ups. Last week we even had our very first Rock Concert performed with some children on the maracas, drums, tambourines, triangle and bells. The band even had their own dancers who enjoyed twirling, spinning, jumping and moving with their colourful scarves and ribbons to the music. Kindergarten is definitely the place to be if you would like some extra colour, laughter and fun in your life!

2018 COLLEGE PRODUCTION ANNOUNCEMENT
We are pleased to announce the 2018 Holy Cross College Production of VILLAIN SCHOOL!
The show is set at The Villains’ Institute for Learning Evil (V.I.L.E.), where all the famous storybook villains go to learn their wicked ways. Like any school, V.I.L.E. has its own social groups: The Monsters, who are always hungry and love to scare people; the Witches, who make a mean brew; the Convicts, who are expert thieves and con-artists; and the Misfits, who just don’t fit in. There are also the Evil Geniuses, who rule the school and are at the top of the food chain. But everything is turned upside down when the smart and talented new student, Frank Stein, shows up and challenges the status quo. Things get even worse
when he falls head over heels in love... because love is strictly forbidden at Villain School. That’s why Heidi Jekyll, the object of Frank’s desire, wants nothing to do with him. That is, until the potion she concocts for the science fair goes awry, transforming her into a sugary sweet princess. Faced with potential expulsion and certain embarrassment, will the forces of evil ultimately tear them apart, or will true love prevail?
Auditions will be taking place later this term for all Year 7-12 students and we look forward to presenting Villain School to the College Community in 2018!

Junior School Inter-School Athletics Carnival
Friday, October 27 saw the HCC Junior Athletics Team for 2017 represent the College in the B Division CPSSA Athletics Carnival.
Students from Years 3 to 6 committed to two weeks of intense training in the lead up to the carnival, training nearly every day before school. The effort and dedication from the team of just over 50 students was fantastic and with the guidance of the equally committed coaches made some great progress before final spots were selected.
The team, led by Junior Athletics Captains Geah Kot and Brooklyn Stainforth arrived at the WA Athletics Stadium filled with anticipation and perhaps a little overwhelmed at the size of the venue. We were very excited but knew some great challenges awaited us.
The students represented the College brilliantly as we experienced a fantastic range of excellent performances, resilience, team work, sacrifice and genuine joy for the success of all members within the team. The cheering and support of each other was clearly our biggest strength.
As this was the first ever Junior Inter School carnival that Holy Cross has attended, enjoying the experience and giving our very best individual effort was the biggest focus for the day. The students exceeded expectations in this area implementing their training to perfection.
Unfortunately, we finished in 8th place, but have lots of areas to improve on for next year. The day was a great introduction to the competitive environment of inter school sport and the effort and behaviour of the students through out the day was fantastic.
I would like to extend my thanks to Marnie Barrett, Simon Falcone, James Parsons, Margaret McMahon, Jessica Armenti and Aoife Hickey for their expertise and time during the training phase and to Jo Borg and Orilee Ryan for their assistance on the day. The students are extremely lucky to have your skills available to them and their performance on the day was testament to this.
We look forward to 2018, with more training, increased familiarity of the venue and expectations of the day we will definitely improve.
Great work HCC.
Anti-Poverty Week Mass
It was a wonderful opportunity for students across Perth to give thanks for the fundraising and awareness-raising activities that Catholic primary and secondary schools in our Archdiocese have undertaken in response to the enormous issue of poverty and inequality in our world today.

Year 2
In Year 2, we have had an exciting and positive start to Spring Term.
This week, we have been busy consolidating numeracy concepts, holding class debates and learning to think creatively.
In Mathematics, students have been actively exploring the concepts of measurement using hands-on materials. We measured our feet and estimated their size using paper clips, large dice and unifix cubes. We also ordered the length of various classroom stationery and labeled them in units of measurement.
In writing this term, we will be learning to write a persuasive text. To prepare for this we have held some class debates. We had to decide if we were “for” or “against” each topic and created three arguments to support our point of view. We worked in groups to plan our debate and then presented it to the class. The class then got to vote on each topic. The students decided that:
· Winter is better than Summer
· We should have a school uniform
· Cats are better than dogs
· It is better to go away on the holidays.
Here we are presenting our debates to the class.
In Big Ideas, we are developing our skills in character, through exploring our own strengths. We then had to come up with a Christmas market stall idea and choose our preferred product. This is going to be a very engaging, personally informative and fun term in Big Ideas!

Italian Week
On Wednesday 20 September, at the end of school day, students, teachers, and parents came down to the oval to watch the display of two Lamborghini cars and a Ducati motorbike. The students appreciated taking photos and asking lots of questions.
This was the final event of an intensely cultural HCC Italian week.
Looking forward to next years event!
Grazie a tutti e arrivederci!

Year 6
Find out what the awesome Year 6 class are up to in room PA-LS7!
Big Ideas
Last term, our Big Ideas inquiry question was ‘How can we make a difference?’ This linked with our camp to Albany, as well as integrating with our HASS learning. Each group of students chose one of the places we visited during LIFE week such as; the Old Gaol, the Wind Farm, ANZAC centre, or Whaling Station. We displayed our excellent technology skills by creating QR codes which linked to our videos and keynotes. We explored our creative skills by designing 3D models and hosting a Big Ideas Exhibition for younger classes and parents.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the Year 6 class are exploring the strand of Measurement and Geometry. We have learned how to measure different angles using a protractor and have designed Mini Golf Courses in groups which included a variety of angles, shapes, parallel lines and perpendicular lines. We are continuing to use problem-solving skills by demonstrating a variety of methods to work out problems involving the four operations.
The Year 6 students are currently learning about Poetry in writing. We have been exploring the different types of poetry, as well as coming up with our own poems. We have identified what constitutes a poem and the various elements of poetry that are used, such as; rhythm, rhyme, sound devices, figurative language and structure. We have differentiated between fixed verse and free verse and have created our very own fixed verse poems.

Junior School Athletics Carnival 2017
Thursday October 12 saw our Junior School, from Kindy to Year 6, compete in the 2017 Junior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival. After some delays on the event due to bad weather earlier in the year, we nervously watched the forecasts with our fingers tightly crossed. In the end we were gifted perfect conditions and the student’s enthusiasm for the day matched these conditions.
This year, our format saw Sprint Races, Middle Distance Races, Team Games, Leaderball, Turbo Javelin, Shot Put and the newly designed Grand Relay. The level of effort and House Spirit on display from the students was absolutely superb and as the day progressed we also observed some fantastic individual performances. These performances were accumulated across the day and in Year 3-6, the Champion and Runners Up were awarded for Boys and Girls in each Year Group.

This is an exciting development for our College and we look forward to the challenge of competing against the other Catholic Primary Schools.
Thanks to Physical Education team and all of the Junior School staff for their hard work in making the day run smoothly and sucessfully.
We look forward to conitnuing to grow our Carnival in 2018.

Pre-Primary
Welcome to Spring Term! The children have eased back into Pre-Primary with determination. In Mathematics this term, we are continuing to explore 3D shapes and their properties through hands-on playful experiences. This term, we will soon begin to learn about symmetry and slides, flips and turns using different shapes. This will strengthen our knowledge on how changing the position of an object does not change the shape. We will also be exploring the language we use when describing location and the space around them. We are looking forward to a fun Spring Term!

Year 1
The Year 1 students were very excited to be back this term, especially for the Athletics Carnival! Getting ready for the first event of the day, the students were taken to the start line for their sprints. Mr. Pisano started them off and the students ran as fast as they could. It was awesome to hear all the cheering on the sidelines from both the students and the many parents there to support them.
After a recess break, it was straight back into it. The students had a ball in all the team games, participating in the sack relay, baton relay, beanbag relay, circle ball, egg and spoon race and tunnel ball. They all joined in and showed fantastic sportsmanship towards their team members and other houses. Well done to Ozanam who came first out of the Year 1 Team Games.
To finish off the day, we had the grand relay with one boy and one girl from each house and each year level. It was very close as everyone put their all into it, with Salvado finishing first.
It was a fantastic day overall, with everyone participating and supporting their teammates. Congratulations to the winning house, McCormack!
