Senior Ball

Year 11 and 12 students had a most wonderful evening last Friday at the Senior School Ball held at Caversham House. A special tradition at the College is the pre-ball photo session held in the gardens at the venue, where family are invited to to take their photos. The students then danced the night away!

The Season of Lent

This Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent in the Catholic Church. Lent is a season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we prepare for the Easter Triduum and recalling the death and resurrection of Christ.

So what does this really mean for us as a school community? The 46 days of Lent begins tomorrow with a special day known as ‘Ash Wednesday’. We will be celebrating our Opening School Year Mass as well as Ash Wednesday tomorrow.  The community will be participating in one of the great traditions of the Catholic Church known as the distribution of ashes. All the members of our community will be marked on their forehead with a cross from the ashes of the palms from the 2017 Palm Sunday celebration. The Church performs this ritual to remind us that we are like ash, or dust, rather we are sinners, people who need God, and the cross we receive is a symbol of the fact that although we are sinners, we have a Saviour who loves us to the point of dying by the cross for all of humanity.

Lent then calls people to prepare their hearts over the next 46 days for Easter and we do that specifically through focussing on three main practices.. The first practice which is probably the most commonly known practice is ‘fasting’. Catholics are well known for the fact that they don’t eat meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Friday’s during Lent, the local fish and chips shops tend to make the most of this. But for Catholics fasting is beyond just ‘giving up’ something. It’s not about giving up Netflix, or Facebook for 46 days, but rather fasting is about finding God in our lives. By giving up something we are freeing ourselves up to do something, or to search for God. Perhaps the challenge for our community might be this year that if they give up Netflix for Lent, that they replace that time they normally spend on Netflix reading scripture, going to Mass, or praying a rosary.

The next practice we complete during Lent is known as almsgiving. The most prominent way we do this at Holy Cross is through participating in the Caritas Project Compassion Fundraising. Our students are challenged to give towards Project Compassion during Lent to support the great work of Caritas throughout the world.

The final practice, but arguably the most important practice during Lent is prayer. Catholics are called to actively spend more time in prayer and searching for God in their lives during this season. Perhaps in the busyness and noise of our current society that we could find some quiet space to sit and rest in solitude during this season and find God in the stillness.

Don’t forget that our parish, St Helena’s of the Holy Cross offers Mass on the weekends (Saturday 6pm, Sunday 8am, 9.30am, 5.45pm). Perhaps this Lent is the time we choose to commit to finding God at Mass.

Wishing everyone a blessed Season of Lent. May you find God during this season.

Director of Faith

The HASS Learning Area Welcomes Year 7s!

This week, as part of their Transition schedule, Year 7 students participated in an interactive Humanities and Social Sciences immersion. Students were given some information about the learning area and tips for success, which can be accessed on the cover page of the Humanities and Social Sciences course on Student and Parent Coneqt. Students then participated in a whole year level card sorting game, competing in their House groups.

The object of the game was to be the first house to sort a series of images into the four Humanities and Social Sciences categories of Civics & Citizenship, Economics, History and Geography. In a second round, students then raced to place relevant facts on each card, with the objective to be the House whose colour was most represented.

The Year 7 Humanities and Social Sciences teaching team - Mr Jamie Gotti, Miss Emilie Reynolds, Mrs Karen Dennett and myself welcome the Year 7 students to our learning area and we look forward to an exciting year in Humanities and Social Sciences!

Year 9s Consider How to Bring Lunchtimes to LIFE...

In Week 2, Year 9s launched into their first Big Ideas project for 2018. They are exploring the big question: How can we bring lunchtimes to LIFE? This week, students began to consider their own experiences of a typical lunchtime at Holy Cross College, by producing a 'lunchbox' of their experiences and then undertaking a gallery walk of all of the students' lunch boxes to get an insight into the patterns and trends of Year 9 experiences.

Students then began to use some different types of data, including an interactive survey and interviews with students from other year groups, to develop their ideas about how lunchtimes are currently experienced by students and what some ideas might be to promote the LIFE pillars through lunchtime activities.

Over the coming weeks, students will deepen their awareness of the LIFE pillars and employ design thinking to develop and test a prototype for a business model to better engage students with one or more of the LIFE pillars through lunchtime activities.

Year 7 Big Ideas: Parenting 101!

The Year Sevens began Big Ideas on Thursday of Week 2 and were surprised to learn that they were going to become parents! As an introduction to their learning around the 6C’s and a focus on Citizenship, the students made ‘Flour Babies’ and began the process of caring for the babies 24 hours a day, for 7 days!
The students will take the baby everywhere they go over the next week, only leaving the baby in the crèche to go to P.E or with a responsible babysitter if they have sport outside school.
They will record the baby’s activities in their Baby Book on Book Creator and keep up with daily Flour Baby Challenges on their Seesaw App.
We look forward to watching the adventures of the Flour Babies over the next week and are excited to see the Year Sevens explore all of the 6Cs over the course of the year.
