Students are now permitted to play (with supervision) on the New Norcia Slide Playground in the mornings prior to the school day commencing.  It will, however, remain out of bounds after school.

Please note, due to the risk posed by the connection to the Kiss and Drive area, the ropes playground at the end of the Fitzroy building will remain out of bounds both before and after school.

Year 7 Students Dig Up the Past

On Monday, 19 February, Year 7 students were treated to an Archaeology Incursion to launch the History component of their 2018 HASS Course. The incursion largely took place in San Salvador and  was facilitated by ex Holy Cross College student Jarrod Van der Weide who is currently studying History and Archaeology at the University of Western Australia, along with the Year 7 HASS teaching team.

Jarrod presented an interesting Keynote address in which he outlined the work and significance of archaeologists and gave students some insights into some archaeology projects both in Western Australia and around the world. Students then competed in a Kahoot before embarking on four hands-on rotations to explore for themselves the processes and methods for digging up the past.

The rotations consisted of an archaeological dig demonstration, the opportunity to make and then undertake their own archaeological digs, a fieldwork study sketching and predicting the usefulness of a range of real artefacts from the ancient past and a short introduction to Ancient Greece.

The Archaeology incursion provided students with a sound base on which to begin their study of the ancient past in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Year 7 Team Building Day At Ern Halliday

On Thursday and Friday of week three, our year 7 students were involved in both a Retreat Day at school and a Team Building Day at Ern Halliday in Hillary’s. Ern Halliday saw our students partake in three activities where fears were faced and friendships were made.

‘The Big Swing’ gave students the opportunity to face their fear of heights in a safe environment. Team mates hauled one student at a time up to 8m in the air. Each courageous year 7 then pulled their own pin and swung through the air like a giant pendulum.

Next up was ‘The Crate Climb’, which tested their team work, as students designed, built and then climbed the 6m structure using only crates and encouragement from their peers. To finish the day, students paddled cross trainers along the sunset coast and learnt some advanced paddling techniques and skills along the way.

I’m sure all our year 7 students will agree that their time at Ern Halliday was scary and challenging, but ultimately a brilliant day they will remember for years to come!

Junior School Update

Year 1

We have had a great first three weeks in Year 1! One of our highlights so far was the House Games and Morning Tea where we got to show our House spirit by wearing our House Shirts. We played a series of games in our Houses and were rewarded with juice and a snack for all our hard work.

In class, we have all been very excited about using our iPads and learning how to use all our new apps. We have particularly enjoyed completing quizzes on Kahoot! We have also been learning how to tie our own shoelaces and have been helping each other to learn this tricky concept!

Year 7 Retreat

The theme for Year 7 is “Belonging to a Community” which is focussed around the patron, Frederic Ozanam and the two core values of compassion and connection. This year therefore the Year 7’s will engage in a number of different experiences centred around exploring this theme.

This week along with the team building activities at Ern Halliday, the Year 7’s participated in their annual retreat. Every year group has a devoted retreat time that allows the students to explore their year theme and enrichen their faith.

During the course of their retreat experience the Year 7’s explored the key characteristics of people who belong to communities, what it means to belong to a Catholic community, and what their House communities stand for.

We encourage the students to continue to engage one another in building the community that they are now a part of.

Mr Ryan Shelton
Director of Faith

Our four inter-relationship leaders: Ashlea Jordan, Tadiwanashe Chikwama, Samantha Cosmas and Kyle Braganza joined with other schools in Perth on Shrove Tuesday for an enlightening, uplifting and informative workshop on the valuable work done by Caritas around the globe.  A traditional smoking ceremony was followed by a discussion what social justice really means, with some great musical interludes provided by DJ ‘s Ruby and Daniel.  Anita Finneran, Justice Educator for Western Australia, highlighted to students the important of creating awareness on social justice issues. She used a young Nepalese woman Janaki as an example of how Caritas acknowledges the dignity and right of every human being to a decent  income, a job, and respect from a community. Our leaders then enjoyed some delicious pancakes for a Shrove Tuesday morning tea. A Eucharistic celebration by Archbishop Timothy Costello’s exhorted all students to accept social justice in its entirety, not just a word conveying an idea, but strong challenge, task and invitation to all of us to live as one global family: A meaningful takeaway for our inter-relationship leaders.
